Otter-Messer was founded in 1840 in the Königsmühle in Solingen, Germany, a traditional grinder's watermill. Knives made by Otter-Messer, which the Berns brothers established, have come to represent tradition. They based the name of their company's line of traditional knives on the native otters that may be spotted in northern Germany along riverbanks and in streams. Even though time has passed, competent knifemakers continue to construct Otter-Messer blades using their ancient manufacturing techniques. Since taking over the company in 2011, Frank Rommel has been bringing traditional knife manufacturing into the modern day.
